What is 'Fun'?
What is considered fun? Honestly, ask yourself what makes this activity 'fun'. Is fun purely an emotion, as Catherine Price states in the above Tedtalk? As Catherine Price describes fun, she mentions how fun is not only an emotion but a source of energy as well. She goes on to say that Fun makes people 'glow from within' as if the feeling of having 'fun' energizes them. More importantly, you can not have fun if you are not in the moment. Humans naturally want to control every aspect of our day and commonly stress over minor details throughout the day. However, when it comes to having fun, it is important to let loose and realize you have to go with the flow every once in a while. What do you do for 'fun'? Catherine Price states in the video, "what is the number one source of distraction for most of us these days?. . It was rhetorical, but yes, your phones." It is phenomenal how useful yet distracting our phones can be; it's as if our phones divide us. Have you ever seen a restaurant with people almost mesmerized by their phones? They are not looking at the person they are eating with or anything; it's as if they are addicted to their phone. That is a failed attempt to have fun because those sitting in the restaurant are not present and living in the moment. As Catherine Price mentions, our phones can be an excellent tool and a barrier when connecting to people and having fun. Social media often leaves us feeling empty, and with ads on everything online, we can be pursued to buy things we would typically not purchase. It is essential to realize the power of advertisements throughout social media. Have you ever seen an ad several times? It is a marketing tactic to get us to buy something we think we might 'need.' With all this being said, try disconnecting from your phone and let yourself have some fun; I guarantee you will not regret it.
