The Meaning Behind Popular Advertisements
For starters, let us look at some of the most popular advertisements and their influence on our culture as a whole. What do you see yourself purchasing most of the time? Think about it, advertisements are everywhere, from moving vehicles, building boards on the highways, television commercials, and even scattered across various social media platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, and Snapchat. Advertisers knowingly place all these advertisements everywhere for capitalistic gain. Let's take a look at a simple Coca-cola and Pepsi ad below. Notice when we look at the Pepsi ad, viewers are to believe that Coca-cola is something scary and not meant for consumption; however, when we look at the Coca-cola side of the advertisement, we see that Coca-cola is something people consume and purchase knowing Pepsi is by far the worst. The lifelong Pepsi vs. Coca-cola debate is infinite, with various ads all over the internet. Likely, ads like the Pepsi and Coca-cola ads below help consumers debate which one is by far the best. Next, let us take an in-depth look at Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty advertisement. This advertisement has to be by far one of the best beauty advertisements I have seen in years. All the women in the ad are shown confidently walking and wearing Fenty Beauty products like Rihanna’s $20 Glass Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, a universally beautiful shade of lip gloss for all skin tones. Notice in the advertisement how all the women are very diverse and are overall in love with their skin. This aspect of the ad is one of Rihanna’s claims in all of her cosmetics. For example, Rihanna offers a diverse line of foundations with over 50 shades. More so, Rihanna claims that everybody can and should wear her makeup line: Fenty Beauty. Furthermore, when looking at advertisements from a more in-depth perspective, we can see how and why these advertisements are made as a whole and what impact advertisements have on our constantly changing culture.
